Summer Seeds

27.  Week of October 3

In the depths of my being lies a seed

I seek it with passion, foreknowing, and need

Warming and brightening as the world grows cold

This seed is the gift of the sun’s summer gold

I myself am this gift, my own soul’s delight

Living, empowering my authentic might.

Something happened to you this past summer. There was a moment when you felt challenged, or interested, or connected, or content. A moment when you realized something, or saw your situation in a new way. Maybe several such moments. What has happened in your life since May first, when the light half of the year began?

Sometimes we can see the fruits of these experiences fully ripen in the autumn, but more often they are like little seeds covered in a hazy husk, waiting to drop down into the darkness of winter’s dream to emerge in the spring. What is ripening and standing before you now may be what was conceived the prior summer (that’s summer 2023). It may be something that has been growing and developing for much longer.

Change takes time. We often notice and wake up to change suddenly and it seems like life is transformed in the blink of an eye. Sometimes that happens, yes - but more often the growth and development has been going on for a very long time. Or an event that seems to come out of nowhere is actually the result of many years of small repeated actions.

I worked for a chiropractor; he said that very often when patients came in to see him and he asked what caused their injury, they would say, “I pulled out my back just putting on my pants one morning.” Then he would ask more questions, and discover that the patient had spent 25 years working hunched over underneath cars in an auto shop.

What is here now? Where are you now? How have you grown and changed since last October? For me, this week begins the final month of the year. As we prepare for winter, know that you carry all of summer’s experiences within you. You may not be able to see yet what will develop from your experiences, but the seed of your future lies within, warmed by the summer sun, quietly waiting to help you grow into the most authentic version of yourself.
